How does backup tape rotation work with offsite media storage?

Some clients continue to add assets consistently to the collection of assets that we store for them. However, for many of them, we do manage a rotation schedule where we deliver old tapes to them and they, in turn, send tapes to us that house newer data.

The physical facility is very secure and inventory is governed with strict operational processes that ensure reliable inventory management. Additionally, in an age where online digital data is always under threat, many organizations deliberately choose off line storage of sensitive information assets.

The long-standing industry guidance for media that has to stay usable is 65 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit at 40 to 50 percent relative humidity, with short-term temperature swings held to no more than 7 degrees. GRM media vaults are kept in that range. Colder storage extends media life further and is used for film and other high-sensitivity formats, but it is not what media in active rotation needs, and stability matters as much as the set point itself.

No, these vaults are not exclusively for computer data tapes. A broad range of data and media assets are stored in these vaults, including microfilm, microfiche, audio and video tapes and other non-digital assets such as critical business documents.

Organizations typically store items in climate-controlled vaults that are susceptible to degradation if exposed to moisture, extreme heat, extreme cold or poor air quality for extended periods.
